Natural Areas

Down here in the south folks have in their yards what they call "natural areas". Back up North in Minnesota and the midwest we refered to these as a "clump of trees". Of course the difference might well be related to how down South here folks are too lazy to want to mow about their clumps of trees, so they go to great lengths to make sure nothing else can grow about them, most often via the use of what they call "pine straw", which is just a bale of pine needles they scatter about the bases of these areas with trees. This leaves them pretty much barren due to the high acidity that the pine needles leach into the ground, which works to limit the ability of anything green to take decent root. Even plants placed into these settings are often muted t full growth due to this affect. Thus the tendency to see barren earthen patches about tree bases down South here. Up North we tend to have grass growing right to the bases of our trees, it helps keep the "lawn" wholey intact. Leaves folks a nice shaded area they can actually sit down in somewhat comfortably, rather then sitting on dirt or pine needles that stick and prod all the wrong places as happens down South...
